The International Bureau of Capitals of Culture establishes the US Capital of Culture

Xavier Tudela, President of the International Bureau of Capitals of Culture, and Maria-Teresa Velasco, Delegate of the organization in the USA, made the presentation of the US Capital of Culture, in Washington DC this morning.

The objective of this initiative is to provide a new setting to develop, communicate, promote and encourage local participation in the culture of the USA. The project promotes a better understanding of the US culture within the USA and around the world. It also projects the selected city at both national and international levels, and establishes close collaboration between USCC and other countries and regions around the world, where the concept of Capitals of Culture already exists.

Any city in the USA with a population of more than fifty thousand inhabitants may submit an application to be the next US Capital of Culture.   Also, any state capital (including Washington DC,) with a population of fewer than fifty thousand inhabitants may submit an application to be the next US Capital of Culture.
